Hello! I am Tom Lundin, returning with Modeling Mid-Century Modern after a little break. Unless otherwise credited, all photography and all illustrations are by me. I “eyeball” all the dimensions for my Sketchup illustrations, so please consider any inaccuracies or omissions “artistic license”.

For those of you have remember me from my previous website, sorry I disappeared for awhile! I hope you enjoy the new minimalist “Web 1.0” ad-free layout as much as I do. All of my previous illustrations will be reappearing here, as soon as I can make the time!

Formerly, I was a Rapidograph-era Technical Illustrator (since I was a teen), but for the last decade or so I have been employed in the Boulder, CO based translation/localization industry. I miss illustration dearly, and I love modernism of the past, so . . .

  1. I like Mid Century Modern and Frank Lloyd Wright. Being 18 I wish to become an architect. In my city there is Art Deco and Mid Century Modern architecture.

I thought I did post a picture of that beautiful home. I am going to look, and if I did not, I will post it shortly!

  6. This is the best site I have ever seen!!! Dude, you have some great photo’s and I wish I lived where you are. Atlanta(where I’m from) has good architecture but nothing like you have there. The only thing I can say is keep up the good work.

  8. Great site, Tom. I have been thinking of cataloging my favorite bldgs in Boulder in a fashion similar to your site - and then I found your work! Now I may have to step it up if I really do it. Should you ever desire an additional contributor look me up. See my site and blog: jamecono.com and nicholasfiore.com.

  9. I found your site while searching for info on Arapaho Hills in Littleton. Excellent! This is why the internet rules! I would love to see some modern home floor plans if you know them or know of good links. Thanks, you’ve given me many more places to explore in Denver.

  10. I have to say, this is great stuff. I have loved all things Googie for a long time, I’ve even painted a few. (that’s a challenge!) I lived in Colorado Springs for a while and if you go west through Old Colorado City and head towards Manitou, you’ll find a small row of Googie’s. It’s whats left of the Golden age of motels. You should take a drive thataway, it is a cool place to stay. I also know of a few more Mid Mod houses in small pockets of Littleton if your interested. Thank you for the inspiration, Alisa from Centennial

  11. Hi thanks! Yeah, Manitou Springs, I love all the Googie motel signs down that way! The Broadmoor used to have a hyperbolic parabaloid, I wanted to go down there to see if it is still there. Littleton has the great Arapaho Hills, I will be posting pics of all of those homes in the near future, including a bunch of SketchUp illustrations I had posted to my previous site a couple of years back! Bowmar down in Littleton is also really great. Thanks again for the comments!

  12. Thanks Tom,
You have some great images of mid century. I found another house in Longmont by Roger Easton if you are interested. Keep up the great work!

  13. This site is spectacular. The hidden treasures are the ads from the local newspapers, those I didn’t expect.

Down on Mississippi and Pierce or so there is a shoppette called “Curve” with a spectacular googie sign in great condition.

Funny thing, that. I was a Rapidograph era Tech illustrator too! We are a dying breed.

  15. Hi! Love your site. Considering a move to Denver and this overview may have just served as the tipping point in my decision. Thanks!

  16. I work at a design firm in Colorado. I was watching one of our draftsmen address an envelope the other day, with a sharpie, but he used his rapidograph technique! It was the most lovely envelope that I’v seen recently, because of that skilled hand work.

I’m very interested in your used-to-be-what-we-thought-modern-was-going-to-look-like genre of sketchup models.

    Here’s one of my projects:

    Keep on sketching!

  17. Oh my gosh. In searching for vintage Denver stuff for my mom’s 70th birthday memory book, I came across your site via the Celebrity Sports Center ad. Now you have me totally homesick. I remember just about every building and place photographed. I live in Cali now. If it wasn’t for my body’s aversion to the cold, I’d be back there in a heart beat. By the way, I used to go to Mile Hi church. We were told that the concrete was poured over a large mound of dirt to build the building core. Thanks for a wonderful trip back home. :) AJ

  18. Nice photos
Looking for old pictures of West Colfax, such as Denver Drumstick, Rocky Built, Leo Payne Pontiac, Rockly Music, Old King Soopers, old Safeway, old theater now Freedom HD, Copper Kitchen, and any others
Know where I can find? Thanks

  19. Love the signage! Here in South Africa, businesses expect you to discern their locations through telepathic means (especially the interesting ones). I was googling technical illustrations when I came upon your site. I’ve been considering going into that line of work for awhile now, and your site has provided some encouragement. Thanks!

  23. Thank you for the work you put into this site! Denver (and all) mid-century has always intrigued me. Arapahoe Acres in particular has been one of my favorite neighborhoods since I was old enough to know anything at all about architecture.

I really hope to see a feature on Arapahoe Hills as well…

Thanks again, and keep up the great work!

  24. You are a savior! We’re in the process of home shopping, and I’ve been struggling to impress upon realtors that I am NOT interested in looking at any more Bermuda-style “blah” houses. I want something with some DESIGN! Your site is a gold mine of reference material.
