T-Model Ford – Bad Man

Excellent raw blues, him, drums and occasionally other instruments. Most of this was reworkings of Howlin’ Wolf numbers, but that was fine. I read a review of this where they panned it, I can’t see why, it is truly great. Just saw him 6 months ago, he was 92.

Don Patterson – Funk You

Another Don Patterson lp, this won’t didn’t pop as hard as the previous one I just listened to, but this 1968 lp had some great players, Sonny Stitt on alto, Cecil Bridgewater on trumpet and Houston Person on tenor. These last two guys I haven’t heard before but they were all great.

Meat Puppets – Spring ‘80 Demos

Checked out these very early demos by the Meat Puppets. Crazed garble mouthed covers of ‘77 UK punk like the Damned, Slaughter & the Dogs, Johnny Moped and early LA bands like Vom (!?!), The Dils and The Randoms!

The Decline of Western Civilization

Rewatched this punk documentary from 1981 by Penolope Sheeris, as I got a really clean copy off of laserdisc. It has not been released on DVD as I am sure they can’t get the rights renewed. If you watch it, look for the guy in the orange shirt in the freeze frame spitting scene in the beginning. That’s Bill Bartell from White Flag, you’ll notice him thoughout the rest of the film, often looking for the camera so he can mug!

David Rabbit – Radio First Termer

Wow, I listened to this amazing Vietnam-era underground hard rock radio show which I downloaded off of The Hound Blog. Hard boiled gritty x-rated humor, and finally, a real listen to what the musical backdrop of Vietnam was, instead of the Hollywood version.

Jaki Byard – Out Front

Booker Ervin’s pianist gets the chance to front his own group. A very diverse record. Jaki Byard sometimes does bops and ballads with just him, bass and drums, a heavily written many-sectioned piece with him, Booker Ervin and Richard Williams, and even a track where Jaki plays alto! Cool record, but when Booker solos, Jaki is no longer out front! The Stereo Stereo Stereo cover reminds me, that I like jazz in mono, for most of this record, the piano is off to the left speaker only.

Chet Baker & Crew

I just listened to this great 1956 Chet Baker lp with stunning tenor sax by Denver jazz great Phil Urso. While Chet plays great, I think Urso comes out on top, usually getting the first solo on each cut.

Ted Curson – Plenty of Horn

Next I listened to Ted Curson’s first LP as a leader from 1961. This LP has the outstanding Bill Barron on tenor, Kenny Drew on piano, and many other greats, even Eric Dolphy!

The Exciting New Organ of Don Patterson

Man what a treat it was to listen to Don Patterson’s first LP as a leader, and who does he have back him up, none other than Booker Ervin. His Hammond B3 organ playing is really unique, he gets this really hot sound where you can hear the tubes poppin and crackling on the B3. Now I have to find his Funk You album.

John Lee Hooker – House Rent Party

This LP is on Ace Records and features 1953-54 material from his time with Modern Records and productions by Bernard Besman, who did things like put the speaker in a toilet for echo. This has all kinds of rarities and alternate takes, mostly just John Lee Hooker and his stompin’ foot, but a few tracks with a backing band.
