Excellent raw blues, him, drums and occasionally other instruments. Most of this was reworkings of Howlin’ Wolf numbers, but that was fine. I read a review of this where they panned it, I can’t see why, it is truly great. Just saw him 6 months ago, he was 92.

Another Don Patterson lp, this won’t didn’t pop as hard as the previous one I just listened to, but this 1968 lp had some great players, Sonny Stitt on alto, Cecil Bridgewater on trumpet and Houston Person on tenor. These last two guys I haven’t heard before but they were all great.

Checked out these very early demos by the Meat Puppets. Crazed garble mouthed covers of ‘77 UK punk like the Damned, Slaughter & the Dogs, Johnny Moped and early LA bands like Vom (!?!), The Dils and The Randoms!

Wow, I listened to this amazing Vietnam-era underground hard rock radio show which I downloaded off of The Hound Blog. Hard boiled gritty x-rated humor, and finally, a real listen to what the musical backdrop of Vietnam was, instead of the Hollywood version.

Booker Ervin’s pianist gets the chance to front his own group. A very diverse record. Jaki Byard sometimes does bops and ballads with just him, bass and drums, a heavily written many-sectioned piece with him, Booker Ervin and Richard Williams, and even a track where Jaki plays alto! Cool record, but when Booker solos, Jaki is no longer out front! The Stereo Stereo Stereo cover reminds me, that I like jazz in mono, for most of this record, the piano is off to the left speaker only.

I just listened to this great 1956 Chet Baker lp with stunning tenor sax by Denver jazz great Phil Urso. While Chet plays great, I think Urso comes out on top, usually getting the first solo on each cut.

Smooth 1957 lp by Rouse, who would make his name two years later as a sideman with Thelonious Monk, and the Vice Pres Paul Quinichette.
The style differences between Rouse’s warm round tone and Quinichette’s Lester Young sound are far less jarring than the John Coltrane-Paul Qunichette lp from the same year.
